Today, I did some proof of concept testing for the new addition to my triple mat cutting stand: a 45 degree angle spike to accommodate vertical cuts. On the first mat, I performed vertical cuts with an ATrim XVIa.3 longsword. After several cuts, a couple being less than perfect, the mat bent slightly. I simple rotated the mat 180 degrees and kept going. On the next mat, I used a Cold Steel Hand and a Half sword to see how a sword with a less than high performance blade geometry would handle this target. As can be seen, it did quite well. For the last mat, I decided to throw in some horizontal cuts, as they would now also result in a 45 degree angle cut to the mat. As you might expect, it took less force to perform the horizontal cuts with the mat at this angle. After this preliminary testing, I would say this method for performing vertical cuts seems promising.
